Chop chop chop
The pieces of painting (above) are all that’s left of the top 24 inches of my painting.
Overall, I think the composition of the painting was strengthened by focusing the eye down the sidewalk instead of into the unstructured mass of leaves at the top of the painting. Adding more glowing color and reflected light in the shadowed areas seemed to make a big difference as well.

I love the feedback.
When I painted “Fall In Fremont” in 2002.  I wanted to express the feeling of the bright grandeur of the old maples that lined the streets of my part of town.  I also loved the way the afternoon light made the shadows glow a hazy blue.
After eight years, I revisited the painting and realized that the composition needed reworking.  So I took the painting off the stretcher bars and went to work, using my extreme editing tool... scissors!  After a few attempts, I finally got the composition to read.  I ended up repainting the buildings on the right,  the light on the cars and trees, and the people at the end of the sidewalk, walking their dog.
